Canada HomeShare

What Can We do for you?

We are excited that Canada HomeShare is expanding across Canada. Canada HomeShare is a non-profit program that matches older adult home providers 55+ with post secondary students to live together. In exchange for subsidized rent (students pay between $400-$600 in monthly rent directly to their home provider) students provide up to seven hours of assistance per week with light household chores/companionship. Our mission is to support aging-in-place for older adults while creating flexible, safe, and affordable housing for post-secondary students. We also work to foster intergenerational engagement and strengthen intergenerational solidarity.

Self funded Sites

Don't live in any of these cities but interested in Canada HomeShare?

Canada HomeShare received a grant to fund our pilot sites. However, other communities are welcome to join the network if they wish to self fund. A 10 match, one year pilot comes in at around $20 000. This includes the salary for the local social worker, tech platform, phone line, data collection and analysis, access to the national support team, the cost of the Vulnerable Sector Police Background checks, the support line, and everything else needed to run a pilot of our facilitated model. The Canada HomeShare National Office manages the project and takes care of everything from hiring and onboarding the social worker to assembling the advisory committee, to case management and wrapping the pilot. If you would like to learn more about the program sign up for our mailing list. If your community would like to explore joining our network as a self funded site contact the national office at

Reimagining the spaces where we live?

Homesharing is not a new concept. The Golden Girls showed us all how its done starting back in 1985. So why don't more people do it on their own? In our work we have seen that a barrier to considering homesharing as an option is the fear of having a bad experience and then having to deal with that on their own. At Canada HomeShare we are here to facilitate and support you through the entire process. Our social workers screen and vet participants and make matches that make sense. This is your home, the most important place to feel at ease. We know that. We also know that deciding to open your home is a big decision and considering it might cause some fears of the unknown to pop up. Reach out to us, we are here to help. If you decided to apply please know that you will set the pace, you will have many opportunities to ask questions and receive more information, and by the time you move in with a match they will not feel like a stranger. Please note that Canada HomeShare is a process, it can take up to three months to be matched and we are unable to provide emergency housing.
